Following on from the Minor Boys impressive victory over Errigal Ciaran on Saturday the Minor Girls had a memorable victory in the local derby over Omagh St Enda’s on Sunday evening.
This was a highly competitive contest, but the usual mix of tenacious defending, composure on the ball, great support play and some superb scores ensured that the Cappagh girls emerged with a well deserved victory on a scoreline of 2 10 to 1 07.
After an early St Enda’s point the girls settled well, got to grips with the pace of the game and soon took the lead with some well taken points. Then midway through the first half, a move that was started by Clodagh McGinn disposing her marker was finished with Louise Sloan slamming the ball into the Omagh net. Omagh rallied towards the end of the first half but the Cappagh defence were in no mood to surrender their lead. Cappagh’s full back line, Jessica McCullagh Aoibhin Bradley and Kerry Quinn battled hard to keep Omagh at bay while the half back line of Clodagh McGinn, Megan Monaghan and Ciara McDermott showed some great composure on the ball and carried the game to Omagh at every opportunity. A special word of mention has to go to our stand in goalkeeper, Grainne McCann who never put a foot wrong and made two or three great saves. The Cappagh midfield pairing of Kate McAleer and Cara Flanagan worked their socks off and got the upper hand in this vital sector ensuring that that the girls went in at halftime leading by 2 points.
After the break the game remained in the balance and when with 15 minutes to go Omagh hit the net, to level the game, the true character and spirit of this team came to the fore. Our half forward line of Emma McAleer, Noleen Carland and Aimme Sweeney ran themselves into the ground. while the full forward line of Louise Sloan, Deborah Hall and Sharon Kate Mulryan worked tirelessly to win possession and took some fabulous scores. With 10 minutes to go and the game all square Emma took off from the 45 metre line, weaved her way through the Omagh backline and finished superbly to the back of the net. After this the girls never looked back going on to win by 6 points. Clodagh McCartan, Niamh Monaghan, Carla Monaghan, Karla McElroy and Megan McLaughlin are integral parts of this team. Two wins from two outings is just reward for the efforts the team have put in. Next up for the girls is an away trip to Castlederg in two weeks time.
The team, especially Grainne, would like to wish Bronwyn a speedy recovery.
