Throwback Thursday – 1934

THROWBACK THURSDAY – In January 1934, the Killyclogher GFC annual meeting was held in the old Primary School beside St. Mary’s Church. A large attendance of players and supporters saw Rev. Michael Collins C.C. preside as Chairman of the proceedings. Fr. Collins went on to become a preeminent Ulster GAA administrator.

The Secretary’s Report was delivered by Mr. Patrick Fullerton and the Treasurer’s Report was submitted by Mr. Hugh Tierney.

Mr. Frank Burns complimented the officers on their work during the year. He especially thanked Fr. Collins who he said had galvanised the old people into a new life and had inspired the youth with a real Gaelic enthusiasm. Mr. J Slevin P.E.T. endorsed the remarks of Mr. Frank Burns.

Fr. Collins thanked the people of Cappagh Parish for supporting the club and expressed the club’s appreciation to Dr. B Lagan for helping injured players throughout the year.

The following office-bearers were elected for 1935: Patron – Rev. W O’Neill P.P.; Chairman – Rev. M Collins C.C.; Vice-Chairman – Mr. J Slevin P.E.T.; Treasurer – Mr. H Tierney; Secretary – Mr. P Fullerton. Management Committee: Messrs. J McGowan P.E.T., Francis Burns, John McKinney, W McKinney, L McKinney, James Kelly, Charles McCrory, J Doogan, H McGartland.

A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr. James Tracey, a member of the club on the death of his mother.

Also in January 1934, a Ceilidh was held in the Courthouse, Omagh under the auspices of Killyclogher GFC. An exceedingly large crowd saw the Killyclogher footballers presented with a valuable set of medals from their supporters to mark appreciation of their great display in their victorious McAleer Cup final.

Songs at intervals were provide by Mr. W Corbett. The music for the dances was excellently rendered by Mr. Joseph Nugent’s Orchestra. Father Collins commended those in attendance who he said had played their part nobly when the first move was made to re-establish the national games and dances in the district some time ago, and he felt assured that these same people who had been so loyal and patriotic, would not falter on the way to still further consolidate the position of the national games and dances in their midst.

Regarding the McAleer Cup final, Fr. Collins stated that the display against Omagh was a splendid exhibition and he said both teams deserved the highest congratulations. He paid tribute to the trainer of the Killyclogher team, Mr. J McDaid, whom he said was responsible in no small way for the success of the club.

The following were presented with medals: James McDaid (trainer); Messrs. G Harkin, M McCrory, J Kelly, P McSwiggan, J O’Loane, J Reilly, J Maguire, E McMullen, E Kelly, L McKinney, E Quinn, H Tierney, F McGowan, J Carmichael, J Tracey,
