Match Report
Cappagh won the U14 league title in Dromore after a competitive game against a spirited Drumragh team. Despite the very warm conditions the girls played fantastic throughout and defended well in the last few minutes to keep Drumragh at arms length.
Cappagh won on a score line of 3-3 to 5 pts. Aoife Taggert was exceptional in goals pulling of a number of saves in both halves to keep Drumragh at bay. In defence Andrea, Cara kept the corner forwards quiet. Amy Quinn Jessica and Blaithin stood toe to toe and won their individual battles with each one carrying the ball out of defence skillfully and controlled to ensure the forwards got into play. Special mention has to go to Erin McMahon who defended like a Trojan in full back keeping tabs on the full forward but also ensuring the runners through the middle had no path to goal.
In midfield Hannah Monaghan worked tirelessly throughout against a strong Drumragh midfield. She was ably assisted by Amy mc Phillips, who played a holding role, winning the midfield battle and keeping the forwards supplied throughout. The midfield was assisted in the first ten by Niamh mc Crory ensuring all breaking ball was picked up before her role was aptly taken over by Cliona Donaldson who played her best game in the Cappagh jersey. Even getting forward on one occasion to score a point from all of 30 yards.
When the ball did go into the forwards, despite the close attention of a well drilled Drumragh defence, the girls managed to put the scores on the board and keep the buffer between themselves and their opponents. In the first half Grainne Murphy worked tirelessly up and down her flank taking the game to her marker. With her comrade and captain Samira on the other flank they won the majority of the kick outs as Aoife Taggert drilled the ball precisely in their direction on every kick out.
Through the centre the Cappagh forwards strength was epitomised by Ciara and Caitlin with Miss Kelly being the biggest thorn for Drumragh on scoring 3 goals. The running of Ciara Heagney throughout the game, with her ability to hold the ball together with her precision passing opening up the Drumragh defence to create opportunities for her team.
Coming of the bench Hannah Mc Cullagh moved into corner forward but towards the end, put in a mighty block, to stop Drumragh closing the gap as Amy Quinn cleared her lines at the edge of her own square.
Congratulations to the girls on winning their second shield in 2013.
