On Monday night, 7th January, we will have our first Bingo of 2013. Our last Bingo night in 2012 was very successful and, hopefully, we will have another good attendance on Monday night to get the New Year underway.
There will be a Club Meeting tonight, Thursday 3rd January, and those with responsibility for the various areas of activity will get a chance to outline their plans for 2013. Volunteers to help on sub committees would be very welcome. We will be promoting Football, Hurling, Handball, Ladies Football and Scór as usual as well as looking after Grounds, Buildings, Fundraising, Club Gear, Hospitality, Lottsodoo, Bingo and ASAP, so there will be plenty to do for anyone who is interested.
We were all shocked and saddened by the death of Hugh McAleer, Arvalee. When the Club was reformed in 1965 Hughie contributed greatly both as a Player and a Member of the Committee. As a close marking defender he had one essential commandment – thou shall not pass. This doctrine was shared by his fellow defenders and helped us to gain promotion in 1968. When he retired from playing he took on refereeing duties on behalf of the Club. His brothers and sisters always gave us good support both on and off the field and his nieces and nephews are continuing that proud tradition. His playing colleagues led by team captain Basil Neville formed a Guard of Honour on behalf of the Club. Go ndéanaí Dia trocaire as a anam.
The wet weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of those who turned out for Sunday’s big game and the standard of play was very good with a few of the “experienced” men staking a claim for inclusion in the 2013 Senior Panel. The match ended in a draw, 1-6 to 1-6.
