Our Minor Girls defeated Carrickmore on a score-line of 9.11 to 3.09, to win the Grade 2 Championship in style on Saturday evening in Loughmacrory. It was the usual mixture of tenacious defending, tireless work in and around the middle and top class finishing.
In the first half when playing into a stiff breeze Molly Keenan was inspirational at full back, Molly never put a foot wrong the whole match cutting out countless attacks and driving the team forward at every opportunity. Molly was ably assisted by the two corner backs, Kerry Quinn and Jessica McCullagh, who battle hard throughout the entire 60 minutes. Noleen Carland, Megan Monaghan and Emma McAleer held the half back line in style, winning plenty of possession and providing the spring board for numerous attacks. Bronwyn Kelly is our last line of defence and undoubtedly is one of the best goal keepers in the county with assured handling and accurate kick outs.
Midfield duties were shared around between Aoibhin Bradley, Cara Flanagan and Kate McAleer. All three are strong competitive footballers and had a steadying influence in and around the middle of the Park.
Despite playing against the wind the girls still went in at half-time leading by four points thanks to Teri McCusker and Aisling Porter raising three green flags between them.
Playing with the wind the girls soon settled and drove relentlessly at Carrickmore in the second half. Teri and Aisling were now simply unstoppable and its unlikely that you will see as a good a display of finishing for a long long time. They were a joy to watch, finishing with four goals each.
Operating at wing half forward Grainne McCann and Aimee Sweeney were now winning plenty of possession and feeding the full forward line, where Sarah Bogues was providing constant support play for Teri and Aisling.
Louise Sloan, Ciara McDermott and Deborah Hall made telling contributions to this game with Louise finding the net for our ninth goal.
The girls can now look forward to the league final next Saturday against Sperrin Og, time and venue yet to be confirmed.
Training this week is on Monday and Thursday at 6.30pm.
