U14 Hurling Tournament, Beragh

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Our U14 hurlers played in The McGurn inter-county hurling tournament on Saturday 24th October organised by Beragh Red Knights.

Wet and windyCatchBlock

In very poor weather conditions the team played very well aginst both Beragh and Cuchulainn’s (Co. Armagh). We played Cuchulainn’s in the final and with the wind and rain in the first half more than held our own. The advantage turned in favour of the Armagh lads in the second half and they ran out deserving winners.

Mc Gurn Cup Team

Well done to all the boys who played and to the parents who helped with transport, also to the Beragh club for refreshments after.

Killyclogher               0-9

Aghyaran                   0-6

Our Senior’s ensured top flight Football for 2010 with a three point win over Aghyaran on Saturday in Drumquin. In a dogged and tense match Dermy Carlin got the first point of the game after three minutes with a now trade-mark burst into the forward line. Just a few moments later Brian Meenan was mightily unlucky to see his thunderous shot to goal rebound of the post. Leo Meenan then doubled our lead and was unfortunate not to push us further forward with a penalty that creeped inches wide. Aghyaran kept the pressure on us and equalised with a Shane Sweeney point and then went ahead with a Martin Penrose score. Damian and Leo then scored two unanswered  points to put us back in the lead. We then survived a fright when Mark O’Kane and Chrissy Donnelly combined magnificently to keep out a certain goal.  Damian then tagged on another point before half time.

After half time we got off to a flier; Brian and James Carlin firing over points. However, Aghyaran regrouped and brought our lead back to one point. In a tense second half we failed to score for 25 minutes. Thankfully, with only three minutes to go Damian fired over a free and Leo scored another one from play. The nervous second half was concluded with another goal line clearance involving Mark, Brian and Tiernan McCann ensuring a three point victory for the boys in blue.

So, another season concludes for the Men’s Senior Footballers; Division One football secured for next year and hopefully one step further to the Final in the Championship.

Cappagh march towards an Ulster Final

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Home advantage and a great team effort helped Cappagh ladies see off the challenge of Donegal Champions, Malin, on Saturday. The ladies had room to spare with a dominant 7-10 to 2-10 win…

A windy Ballinamullan was the venue for the Ulster Junior Championship semi final clash between the Tyrone Champions, Cappagh and the Donegal Champions, Malin.

The game started off as an even contest, with both teams scoring early goals, the girls from Malin then went into a one point lead before great play from the Sweeney sisters Michelle and Kathryn set up Clodagh Poyntz for a well taken score to draw the Tyrone champions level. The girls from Cappagh from this point on never lost the lead. The first half ended with the Cappagh girls going in leading 3-02 to 1-5 the goals coming from Poyntz, McCusker and Michelle Sweeney.

As the second half began the Cappagh girls with the wind at there backs went further ahead with great scores from Aisling Porter, Teri McCusker and Clodagh Poyntz. As the half went on it was clear to see that the girls from Cappagh were on top all over the field with Sinead Kelly, Emma Wallace, Lenice McAleer and Naomi McAnualla playing well in defence and Tracy Wallace driving forward from Mid-Field. Then mid-way through the second half Kathryn Sweeney took the ball from beyond the mid-field and drove forward to score a fanastic goal, at this point there was to be no come back by the Donegal champions as further points came from McCusker and Porter to put Cappagh further ahead. Malin did fight hard and tagged on some good points. Further goals in the second half came from corner back Sinead Kelly, Clodagh Poytz and Aisling Porter.

As the half drew to a close Malin took a quick free kick which ended in the Cappagh net but at this stage it was only a consolation goal.

Team: P Quinn, S Kelly (1-0), N McAnualla, E Wallace, A Nugent, L McAleer, C McAleer, A O’Neill, T Wallace, K Sweeney (1-0), G McGread, T McCusker (1-03), M Sweeney (1-1), C Poyntz (2-2), A Porter (1-3) Subs used: S McGinn for G McGread, M Martin (0-1) for A Nugent and C McCusker for S Kelly.

Earlier in the day Corduff caused a major upset when they defeated hot favorites Ardtrea 2-9 to 2-8.

Overall the girls from Cappagh were brilliant with great performances all over the field, they and coach Ciaran Carland can now look forward to an Ulster Final in Clones on 24 October (where they will meet Corduff, of Monaghan) and will have their sights firmly set on coming home to Cappagh with the cup.

Killyclogher edged out by Ardboe

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

The Senior Championship ended in narrowest of defeats at Pomeroy on Sunday. The blues took a little while to find there composure but after taking their first score on 17 minutes they continued to grow in  stature. Ardboes fist half goal would prove to be  the decisive moment of the first half. After the break the blues upped their work and scoring rate gradually clawing back the Arboe lead. In a tense final quarter mistakes by both teams kept the large crowd enthralled, but as the final whistle blew it wasn’t to be.

Cappagh Ladies too strong in Brewster Park

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

In bracing yet perfect conditions at Brewster Park today, Cappagh ladies ran out winners in the first round Ulster Club Championship against Enniskillen Gaels.

uc_1st_round

Cappagh put in a powerful performance remaining comfortably in the lead throughout the game having Clodagh Poyntz opening the game with a well scored point from play in the first five minutes.

Enniskillen Gaels faced a massive blow when one of their strongest players, Terri Cassidy, was sent off with a straight red in the first half. The end of the first half saw Cappagh up 1-08 to 0-02 and a display of some talented performances from midfielder Tracy Wallace, half forward Grainne McGread and all ball being stopped going into Enniskillen Gaels forward line by Cappagh’s Naomi McAnulla.

Enniskillen Gaels tried their hardest to get back in the game with a superb point kicked by full forward Lynn McFredrick, however, Cappagh continued to sail through the second half finishing off on a score line of 4-16 to 1-02.

Cappagh’s forward line proved too strong for Enniskillen Gaels with the fast pace and outstanding play of Terri McCusker and Aisling Porter breaking through each time to score 1-04 each.

Cappagh will now face Donegal side, Malin, in the Ulster semi-finals THIS Saturday 10th October at Ballinamullan.
