The Killyclogher/Cappagh Golf Classic 2009

After a nervous wait on the inclement weather, Friday the 21st of August would turn out to a special day for all the golfers who took part. Club man and current Omagh Golf Club Captain, John Wallace said ‘it looked like we might be rained off but the greens keepers and staff worked through the night to ensure the course was playable’.

And playable it was, forty five teams took part with a first tee time of 9am right through to the final team driving off at 5 in the evening. Apart for a few odd showers the day went brilliantly and the atmosphere on the course was matched only by the atmosphere in the Clubhouse; where late into the evening the all important prizes were handed out.

A wet and windy Greencastle was the venue on Friday evening past for the Junior Championship final between local rivals Cappagh and Omagh St Endas.

The Girls from Omagh with the wind to there backs in the first half got off to the best possible starting scoring a goal early on, it took the girls in blue a while to shake off some nerves but it wasn’t long until they got into their stride with goals from mid-field dynamo Tracy Wallace, Michelle Sweeney who made some great forward runs and Teri McCusker who can always be relied upon to pop with a goal when given the opportunity.  Cappagh’s goal keeper Paula Quinn made some great saves in the first half along with some great goal line clearances when under pressure from the Omagh forwards, the Cappagh defence work well together with great performances from Una McCullagh, Naomi McAnualla and Anna Nugent.

St Enda’s went in at half time winning 2-05 to Cappagh’s 3-01. The second half was a nervy affair with at one stage St Enda’s taking a 3 point lead. Cappagh got back on track quickly with points from Aisling Porter, Tracy Wallace and Captain Clodagh Poytnz, the game was looking like it was heading for a draw when in injury time up stepped U16 player and super-sub Aisling Porter who showing no signs of any nerves scored a cracking goal, then with some great defending the Cappagh girls held out for a great victory.

Overall this was a great team performance all over the field from Ciaran Carlands team with every player stepping up to the mark when it counted and against some very bad weather conditions both teams contributed well to a tense and exciting game of football.
